The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is
grounded in the context of the mission of Duquesne University,
particularly its focus on serving students. Our primary goal is to
instruct students in the mathematical sciences, and more generally to
enhance our students’ logical reasoning and problem solving skills.
Toward these goals, we strive to treat each learner as an individual
and we encourage significant interaction among students, faculty, and
staff. To ensure continual improvement in meeting our goals we are
committed to supporting each other as we seek excellence in teaching,
scholarship, and service.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Duquesne
University offers unique education and career opportunities
for students choosing a program leading to either a Bachelor
of Science in Computer Science or a Bachelor of Arts in
Computer Science.
The computer science program gives students a knowledge
of the theoretical basis of computing, an appreciation for
the relationship between the various components of the field,
skills in applying the subject to practical problems, and
the ability to adapt to new technologies and advancements
in the discipline.
Computer science students learn to identify problems best
solved by a computer and to design and implement effective,
economical, and creative solutions. Students in the discipline
have available to them specialty laboratories with the most
modern equipment. Computer science students learn a wide
variety of programming languages including C, C++, Java,
Assembly, Lisp, and Prolog and operating systems including
Linux and Windows.
